Oh It has begun!!!
The beginning trash talk between Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor at the UFC 205 press conference was pretty nasty and is getting nastier the closer we get to the fight.
Alvarez spoke with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour podcast Monday morning to discuss his upcoming confrontation with McGregor. When asked about being booed at last week’s press conference, Alvarez had some choice words about McGregor’s legion of fans:
(The interview with Alvarez starts at around the 28 minute mark)
“HIS FAN BASE IS (LIKE) HIM. IT’S ALL PERCEPTION. IT SEEMS LIKE HE HAS A LOT OF WWE FANS; GUYS WHO DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT FIGHTING AT ALL. THEY JUST LIKE HIM. I DON’T WANT A FAN WHO DOESN’T KNOW S**T ABOUT MMA.”
The lightweight champion went on to say that he expects to be booed at UFC 205 after being showered with jeers by the New York crowd at the press conference last week.
Many MMA neophytes have grafted onto McGregor and his brash, garish brand of self-promotion and fighting. It’s cool to that the Irishman has attracted new fans to the sport, but his popularity among new and casual fans has certainly engendered resentment among old-school fighters and long-time fans.
“ALL OF MY OTHER OPPONENTS HAVE HAD A WELL-ROUNDED SKILLSET. HE CAN’T HANG IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE SPORT. IN THE CONDITIONING ASPECT, (MCGREGOR) IS JUST NOT AT A GOOD LEVEL OF CONDITIONING.”
UFC 205 will take place on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Alvarez vs. McGregor will headline the card. It will be the Philadelphia native’s first title defense since seizing the strap from Rafael dos Anjos in July.
