The Mayweather vs. McGregor saga continues.
This week saw a huge breakthrough when it was revealed that the T-Mobile arena was on hold for the possible super fight on June 10th. This provisional booking sparked rumours that Floyd was progressing with plans for the fight but there was no response on Conor’s end.
Somebody that knows Conor very well is UFC Insider and MMA Journalist of the Year Ariel Helwani. Helwani, on his weekly show ‘The MMA Hour’, gave his two cents on the venue hold and why he thinks it doesn’t suit Conor’s plans.
“[Mayweather’s] on the offensive. He said ‘lets do it in June.’ That’s an interesting time-frame because historically he fights in either May or September. May is obviously too soon, that’s two months away . June doesn’t really vibe with Conor’s timeline because his wife is going to give birth in May and he said he wanted some time off.”
Helwani is known for his insider knowledge in the world of Mixed Martial Arts. He regularly breaks news of fight announcements and is extremely accurate with his insights. While news broke about the Las Vegas venue hold, Helwani isn’t quite convinced from his sources.
“Front Row Brian on Twitter said that the T-mobile is on hold for June 10th. I have not heard that. I can not confirm that. I haven’t confirmed it. But that’s what he was reporting and that’s what Flo Combat is reporting as well.”
While a lot is still up in the air regarding the fight, Ariel weighed in on when he thinks the fight makes sense time wise.
“I feel like the September time-frame makes a lot more sense for Conor as well and historically Floyd likes to fight around Mexican Independence Day and that falls on a Saturday September 16th. Could that be the day? I don’t know. But again another example of this thing kind of moving along and being a thing and them trying to figure it out.”
As Ariel alluded to – while these plans may not be concrete, plans are being progressed at the very least. The big news surrounds picking a time and place right now. Hopefully that can be decided on sooner rather than later so we can all enjoy the buildup!
