Oh boy. When one superfight is being speculated, another makes the headlines.
George St Pierre announced his return to MMA earlier this year and soon after was booked for a fight. He’s expected to face Michael Bisping for the Middleweight title later this year. Some speculate this fight could take place over the summer, others believe it could be as late as September.
There is no doubt that GSP was a top PPV draw in his run as Welterweight champion. He went undefeated as champion and arguably remains one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. But he is 35 years of age, and doesn’t plan to fight for more than a couple of years. So the question looms, who will he face in his retirement fight?
According to GSP’s boxing trainer Freddie Roach, they want Conor McGregor.
“With the last fight, we’re hoping (for it) to be (Conor) McGregor.”
This may not be GSP coming out and seeking the fight himself. However Roach is very close to GSP and was integral in his negotiations to return to the UFC earlier this year. He elaborated on the possible superfight happening.
“Who wouldn’t want that fight? I mean, it’s a big fight,” Roach said. “We’d have to maybe cut weight, meet in the middle somewhere, but there’s long negotiations (that could) still happen, of course. But, who wouldn’t want that fight?”
